Code of Ethics

PUBLICATION ETHICS AND BEST PRACTICES STATEMENT

Educação Matemática Pesquisa is committed to ensuring the highest standards of publication ethics.

To this end, we uphold the following principles, based on the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors, provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Authors' responsibilities:

  • To ensure there is a consensus among all co-authors regarding the approval of the final version of the article and its subsequent submission to the journal Educação Matemática Pesquisa for publication.
  • To refrain from submitting the same article simultaneously to more than one publication and from submitting multiple similar and/or minimally relevant manuscripts based on the same research.
  • To limit the list of authors exclusively to those who contributed significantly to the conception, design, execution, and interpretation of the reported study, and not to include ghost or 'guest' authors. Other individuals who participated only in certain aspects of the research project should be acknowledged in the text only as collaborators.
  • To present work conducted rigorously, including an objective discussion of its significance. The underlying research data must be represented accurately in the article. Fabricated or falsified data and fraudulent or intentionally inaccurate statements constitute unethical and unacceptable behavior that will lead the Editorial Board to act in accordance with COPE, including requesting an investigation by the authors' employers, the institutions where the research was conducted, its funding bodies, or an appropriate authority.
  • To refrain from taking ideas or work from other authors without giving them due credit. Including even a single sentence from another person's manuscript, or even one's own, without proper citation is considered plagiarism and constitutes a crime, as provided for in Law 9.610 (Copyright Law) and Article 184 of the Brazilian Penal Code. Reviewers are vigilant about redundant publication ("salami slicing") as well as plagiarism, and the journal's Editorial Board uses computerized tools to detect them. Cases of suspected misconduct will be handled according to COPE guidelines.
  • To disclose any potential financial or other relevant conflicts of interest for all authors when submitting a work.
  • To notify the Editorial Board of Educação Matemática Pesquisa immediately upon discovering a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work and to cooperate with the Editorial Board to correct it or, if unavoidable, to retract the article from publication.

Reviewers' responsibilities:

  • To immediately inform the Editorial Board of Educação Matemática Pesquisa if they feel unqualified to review the research described in the article or know that their review cannot be completed within the defined deadlines, so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.
  • To refrain from reviewing articles in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or ties with any of the authors, companies, or institutions related to them, immediately informing the Editorial Board of Educação Matemática Pesquisa, so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.
  • To structure their opinions in an objective and constructive manner, with observations written clearly and courteously, and supported by scientific arguments, so that authors can use them to improve their article.
  • To evaluate articles solely based on their content, independent of any other factors such as the authors' race, age, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, religious belief, nationality, political orientation, or social class.
  • To treat all articles received as part of the peer review process as confidential documents and to maintain the confidentiality of any privileged information or ideas obtained through the peer review process, never using them for personal gain.
  • To immediately inform the Editorial Board of Educação Matemática Pesquisa if they detect any violation of publication ethics by the authors of the work under their review, including suspected plagiarism or redundant publication.

Editors' responsibilities:

  • To ensure that the peer review process for articles submitted to Educação Matemática Pesquisa is anonymous (double-blind peer review), fair, and impartial, and that all information related to them, including the identities of authors and reviewers, remains confidential.
  • To ensure that all articles and research reviews are evaluated by two anonymous, doctoral-level reviewers with expertise in the research area of the work, and free from competing interests, respecting authors' requests for a specific individual not to review their submission, if these requests are well-founded and practicable.
  • To ask reviewers to be vigilant about ethical issues and potential research and publication failures, including unethical research design, insufficient details on patient consent or protection of research subjects, and improper data manipulation and presentation, plagiarism, and redundant publication.
  • To require reviewers to disclose any potential conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or ties with any of the authors, companies, or institutions related to them before accepting or reviewing a submission, to ensure that readers are informed about them, and to correct the publication if conflicting interests are revealed after publication.
  • To maintain systems to detect plagiarized text when suspicions are raised.
  • To ensure that the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript for publication is based solely on the importance, originality, clarity, validity, and relevance of the study to the scope of Educação Matemática Pesquisa. To seek assurances that all research has been approved by an appropriate research ethics committee.
  • To ensure that authors have an appeal mechanism against editorial decisions and to always be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary, and to justify any significant deviation from the described evaluation processes.
  • To publish and regularly review instructions for authors and reviewers, and to provide details on how they handle cases of suspected misconduct, such as those recommended by COPE.
  • To monitor the performance of reviewers and take steps to ensure that it is of a high standard, and that the reviewer base reflects the community of Educação Matemática Pesquisa. To cease using reviewers who consistently produce discourteous, low-quality, or late reviews. To add new reviewers as needed, drawing on a wide range of sources (not just personal contacts) to identify potential new reviewers, such as author suggestions and bibliographic databases.
  • In cases of suspicion or allegation of misconduct, whether concerning published works or those under evaluation, to act in accordance with COPE guidelines.
  • Not to simply reject manuscripts that raise concerns about possible misconduct.
  • To request a response from those suspected of misconduct. If the response is unsatisfactory, to request an investigation by the authors' employers, the institutions where the research was conducted, its funding bodies, or an appropriate authority.
  • To make all reasonable efforts to ensure that a proper investigation into the alleged misconduct is conducted.
  • To take responsibility for everything published in Educação Matemática Pesquisa, to defend freedom of expression, and to prevent commercial interests from compromising the ethical standards of Educação Matemática Pesquisa.

PROCEDURES FOR DEALING WITH SUSPECTED MISCONDUCT

  • Misconduct and unethical behavior such as plagiarism, redundancy (duplicate publication), fabricated data, conflicts of interest, or ethical issues (e.g., violation of protected patents, experiments on animals or humans without proper ethical rigor) may be identified and brought to the editor's attention at any time, by anyone.
  • Anyone who informs the editor of such conduct must provide sufficient information and evidence for an investigation to be initiated. All allegations must be taken seriously and treated in the same manner until a definitive decision or conclusion is reached.
  • In the event of detection or suspicion before or after publication of the manuscript, the editors of Educação Matemática Pesquisa will take action in accordance with the guidelines recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), available at: https://publicationethics.org/guidance/guideline/retraction-guidelines
  • In the event that plagiarism, redundancy, fabricated data, conflicts of interest, or ethical problems are proven in any published article, Educação Matemática Pesquisa is exempt from any liability, and the authors will be subject to all legal penalties and the burden of any irregularities committed by them.
  • In the case of misconduct detection, depending on the type and severity of the case, the authors may face one or more of the following penalties:
  1. Being formally informed about possible misunderstandings that led to misconduct.
  2. Being mentioned in a formal notice or editorial in the journal detailing the misconduct.
  3. Having the case formally reported to the head of their department or their funding agency.
  4. Being barred from submitting new manuscripts to the journal.
  5. Having the case formally reported to a professional organization or higher authority for further investigation and action.
