FRONTEIRAZ 27 - MEDIATIONS OF WRITING

In his book Does Writing Have a Future? philosopher Vilém Flusser discusses in a comprehensive way the different mediations of writing – from orality to calculus. In the face of an increase in nonverbal communication in networks, new experiences of text mediation have emerged. This is not a phenomenon restricted to the so-called digital age. There is a long and diversified tradition in literature which explores the diverse possibilities of writing in the media. Concrete poetry has delved into these possibilities clashing with the latest media of its time; the most striking example is Augusto de Campos’s work, which ranges from paper to computer, involving holography, electronic displays, laser, three-dimensional objects, and interventions in architecture This semiotic plurality in writing in the media appears in specialized literature in writings and editions by Harry Polkinhorn, Marjorie Perllof, Eduardo Kac, Julio Mendonça, Giselle Beiguelman, Omar Khouri and Philadelpho Menezes, the latter five of them also being important poets. Many authors have been expressing the idea of different semiotic turns, which each time identify a different language replacing writing. There are vague prognoses once they do not grasp the multisensory nature of contemporary media environments, which includes writing itself, in its web of hybridization of intersemiotic nature.

This issue of FronteiraZ aims at contextualizing this process besides analysing its latest developments. The journal welcomes articles on the different mediations of writing, such as sound poeotry, visual poetry, vídeo poetry, digital literature, poetry in networks and apps and performance writing, besides other mediations. Among the possible themes are the practices and processes of such languages, critical views of works and authors, theoretical debates, reflections on trends or relevant concepts and problems arising from the archiving processes of writing in the media, among others.

Deadline for submission of texts: June 10, 2021.
