In their own shaping processes, the literatures of Portuguese-speaking countries are characterized by movement and porosity in their boundaries: wanderings, pilgrimages, nautical epics, land and hinterland journeys, migrations, and other drifts are constant events in the literature of Portuguese-speaking countries in all epochs and genres. With these premises in mind, we intend to explore the multiple displacements staged by these literatures, conceiving this notion in its broadest semantic scope, as a place of elaboration and reconfiguration of meanings and expressive forms. The study of migrations and forced transits that occurred – and still occur – both among Portuguese-speaking nations and among Portuguese-speaking and non-Portuguese-speaking nations holds great significance, which is conducive to the articulation of new locality productions (Appadurai 1996).

In addition to the conceptualisation of spaces and trans-geographical mobility, such displacement also opens the way for the circulation of ideas, arts, and sociocultural influences. Texts move through different epochs and cultures, being under constant re-signification; ideas and cultural models are dynamized through a continuous negotiation of symbolic content. In a broader sente, literature and the arts respond to these demands in different manners, by blurring, for instance, semiotic boundaries, thus establishing hybrid spaces for the expression and relations among different discourses which actively struggle against barriers such as medium, genre, and code (Ryan 2021) – besides other limits –, and offer new opportunities for communication.

This issue of FronteiraZ welcomes submissions focusing on themes such as migration, exile, exodus, travel, and cultural exchange in the literatures of Portuguese-speaking countries; additionally, articles that explore inter-art, transgenological, multimodal, and transmediatic dialogues, as well as other relational possibilities in Lusophony are most welcome.
