The new building of the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) in Copacabana is part of a set of urban changes in Rio de Janeiro that seek to reinforce a touristic and cosmopolitan profile to the city. At the MIS, music plays an important role in the development of that “carioca identity”. In this paper, we discuss the conflicts and contradictions of some aesthetic choices made by the museum, understanding that the musical repertoires chosen by the institution work to crystallize a conventional musical and artistic pattern, reifying models and values already sedimented in the stereotypical imagery of the city.
