Abstract

In 1925, Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett (1867-1925), his son Jack (1903-1925), and Jack’s best friend, Raleigh Rimmel (1902-1925) disappeared in the jungles of Mato Grosso in search of a lost city. Their disappearance provoked an overwhelming international reaction. In Brazil, in addition to reports and statements from federal and local authorities, the English colonel’s disappearance elicited reactions from the most authoritative expert on the backlands of Brazil: Cândido Mariano Rondon (1865-1958). In this essay, I explore specific aspects of Fawcett’s adventure centered on two strands of inquiry. The first refers to the different expeditionary projects in the Brazilian backlands and the contrasting imaginaries of occult/positivist modernities embraced by Fawcett and Rondon in the 1920s. The second compares the visions and interpretative contexts of then arratives of Exploration Fawcett, (1953), compiled by Brian Fawcett, the memoir, Ruins in the Sky (1958), written by Brian Fawcett, and the reports “E Fawcett não voltou” by  EdmarMorel (1944), and “Esqueleto na Lagoa Verde” by Antonio Callado (1953). Using primary sources, critical textual analysis, historical contexts, and anthropological perspectives, the essay highlights a range of imaginaries concerning enchanted/disenchanted modernities, reality/fiction, the nation, Amazonian nature and Indigenous inhabitants.

Beatriz Jaguaribe, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Professora emérita da Escola de Comunicação da UFRJ. Foi professora visitante em Harvard, Princeton, New School for Social Research, University of Texas, Austin, entre outras instituições estrangeiras. Seus interesses de pesquisa são:  estudos urbanos, imaginários nacionais na América Latina e invenções do eu na literatura, mídia e cultura visual.  Entre suas publicações estão os livros Fins de século (1998), Choque do Real ( 2007), Rio de Janeiro: Urban Culture Through the Eyes of the City ( 2014).
