This paper aims to analyze Portuguese language course materials, with regard to the work developed with students concerning their inference processes in reading. We use the concepts of reading derived from the studies in cognition. Analyzing three course books of the 9th grade, we found that working with inferences generated by the students takes place in a precarious way, since course books play a controlling role in the classroom, which prevents the development of a high quality work able to evaluate and validate the students’ inference process.Downloads
