Abstract

In this article, I describe the use of textbooks in foreign language teaching as an institutional practice. According to the sociologists Berger and Luckmann (1966), historicity, control and need of legitimation are to be considered major characteristics of institutions. My aim is to identify these features in the history of German teaching textbooks.
