Abstract

The number of bilingual schools is increasing in all regions in Brazil. Nonetheless, up to the present time, there are no legislations that regulate these schools at national level. Many parents enroll their children in so called bilingual schools since pre-school and what they get is a second language intensive training rather than bilingual education. The objective of this study was to discuss bilingual education in pre-schools, emphasizing differences amongst bilingual schools. The study was based on a literature review on the theme. We have concluded that the need of implementing a legislation at national level that regulate bilingual pre-schools and their curriculum in Brazil is urgent. What’s more, it would be possible to rule out schools that only focus on a second language.
