Voting is one of the cornerstones of democracy and a modification of the voting system could bring irreversible consequences. In line with the decreasing levels of interest and political participation in Western democracies, Electronic Voting Systems have been studied and developed around the globe. The main purpose of this article is, through a meta-analysis, to review and understand the evolution of the study of e-voting strategies, particularly in Portugal. This article offers a broad overview of the research on e-voting systems, clarifying what has been studied on this subject. It is found that the evolution of the study on e-voting has been increasing, particularly after the beginning of the 21st century, with a growing but not accentuated pattern, characterized by several breaks over the years.
