Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877), a Portuguese writer and historian, is known as the introducer of the historical novel in the Portuguese language, and such a novelistic form was already widely cultivated, for example, in France and England. The author was concerned with detailing historical data and architectural sets, rites, and clothing to set his narratives in the past better. However, these descriptions were also ways of reflecting on the present time of its publications, as well as the future of Portugal. In this study, we analyze excerpts from the medieval procession of Corpus Christi, described in O Monge de Cister ou a época de D. João I (1848), a novel set in the 14th century. We verified how the popular manifestations are represented in a procession of an official feast of the Catholic liturgical calendar to understand why the narrator takes so long in details of a procession – in a long narrative digression – and what is the relationship of this report with the publication period. To do so, we dialogue, above all, with the works of José Mattoso (1993), Mikhail Bakhtin (2010), Peter Burke (2013), and Rui Ferreira (2017).
