The neoliberal view in religious discourse

The entrepreneurial ideology in the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God

Abstract

This work explores the affinities between the discourse of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Portugal, during the financial crisis and the austerity program, and the neoliberal thought, using the concept of entrepreneurship as the central analysis in the rhetoric of both. We delve into UCKG’s written production – the newspaper Folha de Portugal – for a two-year period (2010 and 2012), researching all references to entrepreneurship and related concepts, carrying out discourse analysis. The data collected points to an overestimation of entrepreneurship as a solution to the crisis, and a poor understanding of the constraints caused by the crisis and austerity and, this suggests the alignment of this religious discourse with the neoliberal habitus and ideology.
