Abstract

The first homoerotic tale in Brazil, “The Gouveia’s Boy”, was released in February 1914. It is the sixth volume of the “Quick Stories” collection of the erotic magazine O Rio Nu (1898- 1916), aimed at heterosexual men. However, O Rio Nu starts a joking and erotic narrative with such a “Gouveia” from July 1906 until the release of the short story in 1914. Such a real character is portrayed in O Rio Nu as an older man with anal sex tare. In addition to fiction, the tale is inspired by a real event that occurred in 1906, involving the Gouveia, including the name becoming slang and an urban legend in Rio de Janeiro of that period. This discovery is due to a research carried out in the newspapers Jornal do Brasil, Jornal do Commercio and O Paiz, between May and July 1906, to verify some news published about the “Gouveia” in the Brazilian Digital Library of the National Library Foundation.
