THE CONCEPT OF AMUSEMENT IN THE CITY OF SÃO PAULO (1828-1867)

Abstract

This work has as objective to understand, from the perspective of conceptual history, the concept of amusement articulated in the city of São Paulo between the years 1828 and 1867. For this, the main sources were the newspapers A Phenix, Correio Paulistano, Diário de S. Paulo, Ensaios Literários, O Acayaba, O Farol Paulistano, e O Novo Farol Paulistano, in addition to the literature produced by foreign travelers. It was possible to verify that several words were used to designate the concept of amusement. There was a dispute between the words hobby, fun, recreation, leisure and amusement, in which the latter came out victorious, constituting the signifier of the concept. Your meaning concerned many varied activities that included from reading and theater, to mockery, and its senses were joy, pleasure, rejoicing.
