Abstract

Based on the workers' press and on articles published by the great Amazonian press of the time, the article addresses the dilemmas of socialist propaganda developed in Manaus in the early years of the twentieth century, in the context of the creation of the Labor Center in Manaus. Driven by the expansion of the rubber export economy from 1880 onwards, a rich transit of people and ideas that greatly contributed to the formation of a workers 'identity and the creation of workers' associations in the city, was developed. In this process, two socialist leaders – Alfredo Vasconcelos Lins and Manoel Madruga – who, from the Brazilian Northeast produced a strong propaganda of the socialist principles and created the Workers Center in Manaus, through the Amazonian press, gained prominence, aiming to raise awareness of the local workers, and also aiming for the organization in union associations which took part in mobilization and struggle.
