From the book O sertanejo (1875), by José de Alencar, we analyzed the construction of the national space, taking into account the taking of the interior of Brazil as the authentically Brazilian landscape, which has the cowboy as the protagonist of the country's social formation. For this purpose, excerpts from the novel are selected that elucidate the characterization of the physical geography of the country, intending the Alencarian discourse, with contemporary debates by the author about the nation. We are studying the reception of Alencar's work in Rio de Janeiro newspapers, discussing the attribution of the characterization of the novelist as an idyllic painter of the Brazilian lands.Downloads
