The state of Ceara, in the Northeast region of Brazil, and the province of Santiago del Estero, located in the Northwest region of Argentina, are partially composed by semiarid areas. In the decade of 1930, both of these States were affected by a severe drought, which caused hunger, migration, unemployment and thirst to their population. For this particular article, we are interested in understanding how these regions have been narrated by the newspapers Correio da Manhã, from Rio de Janeiro, and El Mundo, from Buenos Aires, when the drought was taking place. Particularly, we intend to comprehend how these narratives of speech are related to the idea of modernity that is present in these territories histories throughout the centuries.Downloads
