This text discusses the relationship established between popular groups and public authorities in the city of Belém, Brazil, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. It focuses on the multiple social experiences undertaken by the population and the many conflicts which derived from them. It thus stresses the meanings of the violent actions carried out by public powers which modulated these relationships.Downloads
