Abstract

"Public" and "private" have been seen in both history and philosophy as central relationship categories in modern Western thought. Too often they are presented as antithetical, hierarchical, and mutually exclusive terms. Feminist criticism highlights the figurative or metaphorical character of these categories by showing that they also unfold in gender dualisms. The purpose of this article is to highlight the pioneering work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) in dissolving the boundaries of the so-called “two spheres paradigm”, anticipating many of the criticisms that feminist economists would come to make only after the 1990s.
