Abstract

The objective of this work is to insert the music of Ernesto Nazareth in a brazilian historical context, with a intriguing social transformation, taken into account the political and cultural transformations in Rio de Janeiro during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. In this sense Nazareth presents, across the subjectivety and objectivety of his art, both an expectation of what is new and the obvious of what is traditional. Moreover, he lives and produces his music in face of the real possibilities of daily life that both popular and erudite universes grant to Nazareth, directly interfering in his creations, and being a passive part of Nazareth´s attitudes as individual creator achieved in his historical writting. Therefore he represents a reference to the musical composition of future generations, particularly the brazilian nationalists.
