Abstract

The world of peace is a book by Jorge Amado that describes his travels to USSR and other European socialist countries in the aftermath of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. It highly praises socialist countries and strongly criticizes capitalist countries. After the denunciations of Stalin's crimes (1956), Jorge Amado prohibited a reprint of the book. This article points out themes of The world of peace and highlights the importance of being debated for a better understanding of the work of Jorge Amado and for analysis of the debates about the Cold War and Brazilian political period after 1945.
