Abstract

The article discusses the aims of the Catholic Church in the educational field of the First Republic and describes how the Catholic hierarchy was articulated for the return of religious studies to Brazilian law in 1931. In the educational and political field, the action of priest Leonel Franca S.J. was important, especially with the book Ensino religioso, ensino leigo. The opposition to the designation-law of religious studies is described through the speeches of protestant leaders, anarchists and intellectuals, mainly by the historian Sergio Buarque de Hollanda.
