Abstract

This paper contributes to the economic analysis of the criminal behavior through the application of econometric methods to raw data collected by the authors. Questionnaires were applied to several criminals in three jails of the Brazilian state of Paraná: the "Penitenciária Central de Piraquara" (PCP), "Penitenciária Estadual de Piraquara" (PEP) and the "Penitenciária Feminina de Piraquara" (PFP). We found that, among the interviewed, the more inclined to the use of violence in criminal activity are young men, with low average degrees of education that don´t believe in the Justice system and that have guns and partners in the criminal activity. One of themain determinants in the violent behavior of these criminals is the right to carry guns.
