This paper has as main objective to evaluate briefly the importance of the WTO in the liberalization of international trade, from the observation of its action in the case of Rare Earths. In order to do so, a brief description will be made of the negotiations involving the WTO, more specifically with regard to the Dispute Settlement Mechanism, which has been used by China in the case of the mineral activity of the so-called Rare Earths. Despite recent developments in the international context, there is evidence that the adequacy of the organization's activities vis-à-vis its purposes is clearly manifested in the case in question, strengthening the role of the WTO in promoting more free and balanced international trade.
