Abstract

Cartography, its practices and thematic possibilities, have long been allies of the human sciences in their investigations, since they allow the transversal visualization of information in a given territory. The technical advance of cartography and the omnipresence of virtual technologies have opened new paths for traditional questions in the humanities. This is the starting point of the book Hypercities: thick mapping in the digital humanities, published in 2014 by Harvard University Press, as part of the investigations of metaLAB, a laboratory and production studio focused on technological experimentations related to arts and humanities. The book is written by three UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) researchers from different fields: Todd Presner, who leads the book's discussion, is a pioneer in the study of digital humanities, a researcher in media history and professor of Germanic languages, comparative literature, and Jewish studies at UCLA; David Shepard, a professor and researcher of comparative literature at the same university; and Yoh Kawano, a sociologist and researcher.
