Abstract

With the theme “Human-Animal-Computational Interaction”, the 22th edition of TECCOGS proposes to address new forms of interaction and cooperation between species. The first decades of the 21st century have been crossed by the emergence of a series of interdisciplinary studies that assess the potential for agency, law, and welfare of non-human animals. Given the urgency to review exceptionalism of the humanistic subject, studies that explore notions of animality are fundamental in the construction of critical thinking about the human and the relationships built with, for, and by non-human animals.

The philosopher René Descartes, in his writings dating from the 17th century, systematically denied conscience to non-human beings. For Descartes, only the human species, the only one with a soul, could qualify as conscious. Even though they have taken a part in the ethical discussions of the last half-century, animals have remained for a long time as autonomous, dominated by instinct, devoid of any experience or intentionality. The actions they performed seemed to be restricted to strictly objective behaviors - chemical processes, mechanical functioning, information processing.
