This article, considering a historiographic perspective, aims to analyze the proposals for grammar teaching in Criatividade e Gramática (1991[1987]), by Carlos Franchi, in order to observe three elements in relation to the author's proposal: linguistics, grammar and teaching. Our research sets out to understand the rhetoric of rupture with the normative and traditional teaching of the Portuguese language. The main elements of analysis are as follows: the author's rhetoric, the historical framework of his influence, and the necessary teaching position in face of the new conceptions of language. It is understood that there is a specificity of Franchi's thought about the science of language which determines his way of understanding grammar teaching.
