Resumo

Salas de aula democráticas valorizam coisas como a voz do aluno, um currículo integrador, disciplinas centradas na resolução de problemas, atividades colaborativas, recursos multiculturais e avaliações reflexivas. Nem sempre é fácil começar e a autonomia do professor é frequentemente limitada, mas existem muitas maneiras de dar vida à democracia na sala de aula, desde que estejamos determinados a fazer isto. Este artigo explora algumas dessas possibilidades.

Biografia do Autor

James Beane, Universidade National-Louis, EUA.

Aualmente aposentado, atuou por muito tempo como docente na educação básica e também como mentor em diferentes momentos e contextos de movimentos de reforma da educação. Ele é autor de obras como: Integração Curricular (1997), Um currículo do Ensino Fundamental (1993) e Afetividade no Currículo (1990). Também é coautor de Escolas Democráticas (1995), O Ensino Fundamental e além (1992), Quando as crianças têm prioridade (1987), Autoconceito, Autoestima e Currículo (1986) e Planejamento e desenvolvimento curricular (1986). Além disso, foi coorganizador do livro Escolas Democráticas e editou o Anuário ASCD, de 1995, para um currículo coerente. Beane proferiu numerosas conferências, foi consultor em diferentes projetos educacionais internacionais e prestou serviços liderando várias associações profissionais de educação.
