Epistemology of research in mathematics education

This article focuses on the "Epistemology of Research in Mathematics Education: Methodology and Technologies". which was the theme of the XXIV EBRAPEM - Brazilian Meeting of Post-Graduate Students in Mathematics Education, taking it in its main statement and performing a philosophical exercise of the meanings that will become evident. Putting the term epistemology under the focus of the investigation is important since in the daily research work it is taken for granted, with no reflection on what it says. The underlying question addressed in the text is whether it makes sense to claim that there is a research epistemology. The article highlights the meanings of epistemology and exposes what these meanings bring in line with its complement of research; it emphasizes the understandings that come from this analysis; it highlights what the clarification made demands to be investigated; and it develops an exercise of imagination, with a view to visualizing what the epistemology of research entails in terms of understandings of research in mathematics education.
