Abstract

The article describes the panorama of publications on the certification of professional competences in health from 2000 to 2020, contemplating conceptual, methodological and practical characteristics. The data obtained from the analysis of 171 articles were submitted to descriptive statistics and content analysis. 84 countries with experience in professional certification were identified. Most research was empirical (65%), descriptive (91.1%) and qualitative (44.6%). Definition of certification and recertification are proposed. The most adopted requirement for certification was the cognitive exam. 16 categories of difficulties and 15 of benefits to certification were identified. The adoption of professional certification is evidenced as a way of prominence and professional recognition.
