Abstract

The present paper investigates the close relationship between the urbanization of the city of São Carlos-SP in the end of the nineteenth century and the epidemics, considering also the demographic increase ensued by subsidized immigration. São Carlos is located in the central region of the State of São Paulo – Western Coffee Plantation, and its economy was marked by the success of the coffee plantation and mass immigration in the end of the nineteenth century. The study of São Carlos is crucial for understanding social medicine and the modus vivendi in the cities of São Paulo state during population growth due to migration influx and the economic transformation caused by coffee in the end of the nineteenth century. Such approach is based on the analysis of magazines and local newspapers published in this period and of migration bulletins, reports, local legislation, census and the related bibliography.

Marili Peres Junqueira é graduada em Letras (Português-Italiano) pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho – Câmpus de Araraquara/SP (1995), mestre em Sociologia (1998) e doutora em Sociologia (2004), todos pela mesma Universidade. Atualmente, é Professora Adjunta, ligada ao Departamento de Ciências Sociais (DECIS) – Faculdade de Artes, Filosofia e Ciências Sociais (FAFCS), da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU).
