“Braços para a lavoura”: a subvenção paulista para imigração (1886-1896)

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze some aspects which permeated the immigration policy in São Paulo through the point of view of subvention. The ten-years period concerned between 1886-1896 has the structural base in the Sociedade Promotora da Imigração to the organization of every apparatus related to the arrival of the immigrants to the coffee plantation and the specificities of provincial management to the organization, validation and to make systematic faced with imperial immigration policy that privileged the support the land property, occupation of borders to maintenance of the territorial unity and a project which aimed “to become civil and to clear the Brazilian native population”. It is not intended to emphasize the west of São Paulo initiative myth, but to verify perspectives that are being put by the contemporary history study.
