From "white death" to White Shadows

José Cardoso Pires' literature is extremely rich in characters resulting from active observation. The creation of characters was often inspired by real people, a fact documented in biographical studies of the author. In this paper we aim at analyzing the construction of the figure of the author himself as a character, showing how the author's presence is suggested throughout Cardoso Pires' work as an ambiguous figure, who, although not the empirical author, is still so, due to the metatextual movements created. To this end, we will analyze three works: O Anjo Ancorado (1958), O Delfim (1968) and De Profundis, Valsa Lenta (1997). Moreover, we intend to discuss how this reading can be reinforced by hypertextual dynamics, especially via film adaptation by analyzing the process of figuration (Reis, 2018; Jannidis, 2012) of the writer in Fernando Vendrell's film Sombras Brancas (2023).
