FRONTEIRAZ 26 _ THE POETICS OF THE BODY
FRONTEIRAZ 26 _ THE POETICS OF THE BODY
The human body is probably a prime example of a representable object. On the image of the body are grounded the very categories of representation. According to Merleau Ponty, it contains the general symbolic form of the worldThe body seems to provide a sort of grid to reading the real: José Gil considers the body as a floating signifier, ready to support any symbolic content and to act as a permuting agentor a transductoramong the different in-presence codes.
Various are the nuances that the discussion about the body in – and of– literature has found in current literary studies: from the literary figurations of the body or the propositions of the concept of body that emerge in literature, from eroticism or the body experience generated by the text, as well as the analysis of corporeity of language, to the thematization of performance in writing and its proximity with body arts.Starting especially in the twentieth century, with the emergence of new thoughts about the body in philosophy and in the arts, an expansion of such reflections was noticed, and they include different perceptions of both the poetics of the body and the body in the constitution of new poetics –often in the inter-arts relationship – in dialogue with the fields of drama, dance, performance, music or visual arts.
This issue of Fronteiraz Journal aims at problematizing the multiple possible relations between literature and the body, starting from the expanded conception of both terms. Therefore, the intention is to aggregate discussions of different points of view concerning the body, by contemplating works and authors, irrespective of gender, period and culture.
