Abstract

Although Dante Alighieri, especially in De vulgari eloquentia and the Vita Nova, had had a fundamental role in the consolidation of the modern idea of lyric, i.e. of the idea of a vernacular, subjective and self-reflexive lyric, we do not find the word lyric in his work. We examine here the possible causes of this absence and speculate about what it can mean to the understanding of a history of modern lyric that has its beginnings there.
