Of scenes and cells: dramatization and imprisonment in the Brazilian literature of the twentieth century

Abstract

This paper aims, at first, to consider the extent to which writers such as Clarice Lispector and Guimarães Rosa have prompted the consolidation of the notion of “dramatization” in Brazilian literature and how it has been articulated with scenes of imprisonment. In a second moment, by having Hilda Hilst as a frame of reference, this paper discusses how the notion of “dramatization”, for the last few decades of the 20th century, has been reformulated in order to relate to seduction and violence, by engaging fruitful readings of the roles played by both narrator and readers, as well as of the text-context relationship.
