Abstract

This article aims at discussing the dichotomy “The masters and the Slaves” present in the novels by José de Alencar. Both conceptions were made famous by Gilberto Freyre and here are applied to Alencar`s novel in order to demonstrate the presence of the tropicalism in his writings. Through this approach, the intention is to discuss another very important conception for the Latin-American literature: the space in-between, by Silviano Santiago and the way this conception helps to understand better the project for a formation of an American race in Alencar`s narrative.
