Abstract

The first books intended for Brazilian children were published in the early nineteenth century. Since the beginning, they had close ties with school life, necessarily presenting an educational component. However, before entering the twentieth century, they established a market of their own and paved the way towards strengthening children’s literature as a literary genre.
