Abstract

José de Alencar was one of the most translated Brazilian authors in the nineteenth century and translations of his novels were made into various languages, such as English, German, French, and Italian. This facet of his works has been the subject of rediscovery through studies that aim at analyzing the meanings of these translations in their time and the impact they had on the image of Brazilian literature. This article sets out to verify the presence of José de Alencar’s novels in Italy to understand the relevance of the translations of his works in the context of the international circulation of printed matter during a time when cultural exchanges marked the process of creating national literary identities.
