Abstract

This paper analyses five anthologies of Brazilian poetry in English published between 1954 and 1972, a time when our poetry started to be divulged abroad more regularly, mainly in the United States, due to political interests of that country. The paper opens with a description of each anthology and of the conditions under which it was produced: whether it was funded by universities, governmental agencies or some other source. The initiatives of specific cultural agents, such as foreign poets and translators who got acquainted with our poetry and felt interested in it, will also be approached. The paper closes with a presentation of how four Brazilian Modernist poets – Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Carlos Drummond de Andrade e Manuel Bandeira – were characterized in each anthology.
