The present work intends to investigate the traces of madness in Sylvia Plath’s writing, especially in her book Ariel. We will appreciate not the poet's supposed madness, but the madness of writing itself. In order to analyze the author’s poetic project, we will make use of some theoretical propositions by Roland Barthes about the folly desire of literature, collating these propositions with formulations made by Michel Foucault, by the philosophers Giorgio Agamben and Gilles Deleuze and by the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. We will see what are the crazy poetic procedures used by the poet in her endeavor to say the impossible. It will be possible to perceive how the poet tensions language to the maximum and how she reveals a grain of madness in the center of the texts. At this point, the folly of poetry threatens to overcome the reason of language, writing gets crazy and it murmurs, while it moves away from communicational utilitarianism and gets rid of the common linguistic principles.
