Abstract

The aim of this essay is to present the ways in which Brazil is represented by the Franco-Belgian poet Géo-Charles in the book Poèmes du Brésil (1949), originating from his trip to Brazilian lands, in 1930, to organize the First International Exhibition of Modern Art in Recife, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. From some excerpts from the book, we discuss through critical and analytical evidence the imagistic representation of a Brazilian territory by means of the orchestration and linguistic-poetic appropriations of the signs of the country’s landscape. The conclusion is that Géo-Charles conceives the poems of the book from a utopian and humanist projection of the world, creating his Brésil. The critical fortune about the poet and his work is based on Bourgeois (1985), Emery (1994) and Bauer (2012). The theoretical contributions are from Collot (1988; 1989), Merleau-Ponty (2009), and Lima (1980).
