Abstract

Theoretically supported by Freud notions, this paper argues that, in Graciliano Ramos's third novel, Anguish, the protagonist tries to get rid of the feeling of “insignificance” without realizing that, under this expression, lies a fight between his homicidal desires and self-censorship. Despite not reaching his mind, this conflict provides several indications, such as successive memories of deaths and crimes and a persistent feeling of guilt. The useless attempt to get rid of that feeling by murdering his rival only intensifies his feeling guilty and takes him into a spiral of fantasies, hallucinations and delirium. In this environment, he finds Fernando Inguitai, who, we argue, is the representation of destructive impulses, part of the death instinct.

Suely Corvacho, Instituto Federal de São Paulo - IFSP

Researcher linked to the Post-Doctoral Program in the Department of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at USP, under the supervision of professor Cleusa Rios Pinheiro Passos, with the Project entitled "The game of mirrors in Angústia, by Graciliano Ramos", since January/2021. I have a PhD in Literature (Literary Theory and Comparative Literature) from the University of São Paulo (2004) and a Master's degree in Literature (Literary Theory and Comparative Literature) from the University of São Paulo (1999). I am a retired professor at the Federal Institute of São Paulo (IFSP), where she had experience teaching Language, Literature and Writing in High School, and Portuguese Language and Writing in Higher Education. Participates in two study groups: Literary Criticism and Psychoanalysis, at USP, and GPLEC (Research Group in Literature and Cultural Studies) at IFSP. His bibliographic production is centered on the following themes: works by Graciliano Ramos, mise en abyme, short stories by Guimarães Rosa and teaching Literature.
