Abstract

Dirty Poem (1976) was written in Buenos Aires, where Ferreira Gullar was exiled. The opposition between past and present is constant: the speaker demonstrates displeasure with the present and nostalgia of the past. The passage of time permeates the whole poem, but it is notable in three moments: 1) life, 2) the day and the night, 3) the city. The book can be read as a critique of the dictatorship through an insistent retreat to the past as a strategy to deny and question the “dirty” moment of Brazil in the 1970s.
