Abstract

The article investigates the views of the narrator of the book entitled Cidade de Deus (Lins, 1997) from the essay The position of the narrator in the contemporary novel of Theodor Adorno (1974), in which the philosopher discusses the contours of the novelist and his work in the course of development through the nineteenth and twentieth century. In the essay, Adorno makes a typology of the novel and its narrative procedures, and explains its route and changes, linking them to their historical processes, thus demonstrating the character of the narrator. It situates the novel from its initial and traditional form, toward its contemporary dimension, which does not allow anymore space for the epic narrator, distanced from its object, where he would be able to witness their experiences. From this premise, it demonstrated, in Cidade de Deus, that the narrator (author) is inserted in the historical (and acute) context of his narration, whose point of view is embedded in the domestic matter portrayed – but that does not adhere to it - and therefore, a mediator between the reality and the subject.
