Abstract

This article aims to shed light on the visionary character of Lobato's work by not only starting a period of greater creativity and aesthetic value in literary production aimed at children, hitherto predominantly boring and moralizing, but also by anticipating trends that only later became dominant in aesthetics today understood as contemporary. Focusing on the presence of intertextuality (cf. Stoker, 1998) and metafiction  (cf. Hutcheon, 1980; Waugh, 1985; Wolf, 1997; Navas, 2015) elements in Lobato's work since the 1920s, we will focus, in this text, on their manifestations in the short story “As fadas” (“The fairies”) (in Histórias diversas, 1947) as well as highlighted in the spheres of characters and space, two backdrops for revealing, before the reader’s eyes, the intimate nature of an artistic artifact of the story in question.
