Following a socioconstrucionist perspective of language and social identities and the view that “narrative language contribuites in the construction and exposition of our sense of who we are” (Schiffrin,1996:168), my aim in this article is to analyse the interactional positionings of two men who tell stories about their adolescence in school. “The way we tell our stories also reveals a self that exists within a cultural matrix of meanings, beliefs and normative practices” (Schiffrin, 1996:170); but in these stories new meanings, beliefs and practices can be created. The analysis shows that a specific pattern of masculinity has been reinforced at school.Downloads
