Abstract

This study aims to investigate the role of lexical priming (Hoey, 2005) in the acquisition of the third person singular of the simple present tense by Brazilian learners of English as an L2. Usage patterns of this verb form in the BR-ICLE corpus were identified and compared to similar patterns in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The results show that learners more accurately produced patterns involving verbs that are more frequent in COCA, suggesting that lexical priming appears to influence the acquisition of the third person singular.
