Although he lacked an organic theory regarding the themes of everyday life, José Carlos Mariátegui demonstrated his importance on various occasions, principally as a result of his activities as a journalist, where he analyzed the impacts and metamorphoses of civic and religious festivals under the influence of capitalist modernity. This article presents and analyzes the writings of this Peruvian Marxist, which reveal an ability to blend Marxist theory with interpretations of everyday life. It thus contributes to an area that has not been explored much by contemporary critical Marxism.
