Within a context inwhich Democrats and Republicans acted togetherin defense of austerity policies, the anti-unionmeasures of the governor of Wisconsin led tothe emergence of one of the major workers’movements in the history of the United States, including the occupation of the state capitol bythousands of demonstrators for 17 days. Theprotests against the governor drew one hundredthousand people. In this article we describe theevents and their implications for the class struggleand the political debate in the United States.
