Abstract

The military dictatorship in Brazil profoundly marked the trajectory of Brazilian Social Work.Based on a historical and critical analysis, this article presents arguments that underscore theneed to break, permanently, with conservativisms in society and the profession, in order toadvance toward an emancipatory societal project. These arguments arise from a process of bibliographicaland archival research, as well as a content analysis of interviews. The research isaimed at identifying the mechanisms constructed in the dictatorial period that shaped trainingand professional work, as well as the strategies utilized in the period of rupture with conservatismand the construction of the Ethical and Political Project of Brazilian Social Work.
